Refuge Ecology is a small business focused on providing conservation contracting services on Banks Peninsula and the Port Hills. It is a Christchurch based business with a secondary base at Western Valley, Little River. The desire to make a positive contribution towards protecting biodiversity has led to the business being formed. A refuge is a place that provides protection for plant and animal species that were once more widespread. In nature a refuge will support higher populations of both prey and predator species and support greater biodiversity. Forest remnants and areas of regenerating forest provide a refuge for threatened native species. However these places of refuge are themselves vulnerable to the impacts of pest plants and herbivorous animals. They also support high numbers of predator species. It is our intent to target animal and plant pests so vulnerable native species are able to thrive. Refuge Ecology works along side private landowners and public agencies providing a service that reflects best practise, affordability and compliance with current regulations. |
